The Year of The Dragon
Happy Chinese New Year!
Today marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon which is the most auspicious sign in the Chinese zodiac.
I remember when we were living in Hong Kong and I was pregnant with my daughter, all the local Hong Kong Chinese would tell me how lucky I was to be having a dragon and that she was going to be very strong. Naturally they would’ve liked it better if she’d been a he, but I was happy no matter what.
The dragon represents success and happiness, so let’s hope 2012 is a good year for us all.
There’s lots of dragons to check out in Sydney over the next few weeks – Komodo Dragons, Dragons in Artefacts, the Blue Dragon and Musical Dragons.

Nice Suprise
As you may have read, last month I had a delightful lunch with interior designer and blogger, Linda Merril.
I found Linda’s blog, Surroundings when I first started reading blogs and that led me to her podcast The Skirted Roundtable with Joni and Megan. I love listening to their interviews whilst I’m on the treadmill or out walking the dogs.
Linda and my family had a lovely lunch at a cute little Tea Shop in her home town of Sandwich on Cape Cod. Last week a parcel arrived and I was thrilled to open it and find the cutest little glass dish from Linda.
It is a piece of Sandwich glass. Linda says it could be from the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory that was established in Sandwich in 1825 or it could be an early 20th Century piece with Sandwich Glass Pattern.
Either way it’s very pretty and will remind me of our lovely lunch together and how small this world really is. Thank you so much, Linda. You shouldn’t have, but it was a nice surprise.

There’s No Place Like Home
After tripping around the United States for the past four weeks, I am finally home in my own little abode.
We had a wonderful time and saw so much. But there’s nothing like getting home to your own space and bed.
Travelling certainly broadens the horizons and it was fascinating to see the many styles of architecture and colours used somewhere else. It was also great to visit some of the interior shops and marvel at the seemingly limitless choices there are in more populated countries.
But coming home, made me realise that behind every door, the interiors are probably similar.
There will be a kitchen where the meals are prepared and homework done.
A living room for watching television and conversation with friends and family.
And bedrooms that are as individual as the occupants, yet somehow the same as the next one.
The interiors will be smattered with curios and collectibles that have been purchased for one reason or another or handed down from family. Each item telling a story or transporting the owner to another time and place.
Dorothy was right, There’s no place like home.
She’s just lucky she didn’t have a 17 hour plane flight to get there!
New York State of Mind
So now the calendar has turned over to September I can start to get excited about my upcoming trip to …… (drum roll) ……….. The United States of America!
All my favourite Billy Joel songs keep running through my head – Say Goodbye To Hollywood, New York State of Mind, Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway, Los Angelenos. I’m a HUGE Billy Joel fan.
Anyway, I’m off. Or should I say, we’re off. The three of us in the States for 4 weeks. New York is our first stop and I already have a very long list of interior design and homewares stores I’d like to see. It seems every magazine I pick up lately has an article on someone’s top picks of New York. And as I only read interior magazines, they are mainly design and decor stores.
After New York we’re heading to Vermont and Maine. We’ll probably be a bit early, but we’re hoping to catch a glimpse of some Fall colours. We have a four day road trip in this area.
Then it’s across country to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Corny I know but ever since I saw The Brady Bunch go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on donkeys I’ve wanted to check it out.
Next stop is Disneyland and Los Angeles and then a road trip to San Fransisco before heading back home.
We’ve never been to the States before, even though I’ve been trying to get there for the better part of 30 years. Would love to hear your stories or picks of places to see and things to do. We’re all very excited and have started the countdown. Only 10 more sleeps!
Never have to work
When I first heard this saying, it rang true to me.
I consider myself very lucky to be working in the field of interior design. It is no trouble for me to go to work every day and play with colour and fabric AND I get to meet some lovely people, both clients and suppliers.
But like all of us, there are days that make you wonder if you are really doing the right thing. Naturally things go wrong, hurdles are placed in front of us that we have to work through. But fortunately for me those days are few and far between.
Yesterday I received a lovely note from a client and it makes me realise that it’s all worthwhile.
“Thank you” just doesn’t describe, or begin to describe how grateful we are for ALL that you have done for us over this past year.
What you have created in the transformation of our home is beyond anything we could have imagined. Everywhere we look we see beauty, harmony, warmth, calmness, balance and “completeness”. Your amazing and insightful gift of being able to “know” what we want even when we can’t always find the words or can picture it ourselves is reflected in the way our home now feels like a “perfect fit” for us.
Thank you also for your endless patience, gentle proding and good humour. You really have made this past 12 months so enjoyable!
We’ve been overwhelmed by your commitment and effort and time given, by your professionalism and by your exceptional expertise. In every way, you went above and beyond.
THANK YOU so very much!“
Knowing I’ve brought such enjoyment to my clients makes me very satisfied with my lot.
It’s a long weekend here in Australia. We have Monday off to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. Enjoy!

Home is where….
…..Mum is.
It really doesn’t matter if it’s a house by the beach
or a modern inner city pad
or a family home in the suburbs,
home is where Mum looks after us, and we come together as a family.
This year, for the first time in many, my brother and mum are coming to Sydney for the weekend so we can all celebrate Mother’s Day together. I’m very excited and have booked a table at Sails Restaurant on Sydney Harbour.
I’m looking forward to updating this photo of the three generations that was taken a few years ago when we were last together for Mother’s Day.
I hope all the Mum’s have a lovely day and you all have a great weekend. And if you’ve forgotten to organise some flowers for Mum, ask Jennie to help you out.
Blogiversary
I can’t believe how quickly time passes.
It only seems like yesterday that I dipped my toe into the world of blogging and here we are two years later.
It’s been so much fun and I’ve met so many wonderful people. I love reading all about the lives of people all over the world and what intrigues them in the world of art, fashion, food and design.
I hope you’ve enjoyed being with me over the past two years as much as I’ve enjoyed sharing my views with you.
Thanks for visiting and here’s to another year of blogging fun.
