Keep them in the air

jugglerI feel like this woman, this week. There are so many things going on I just hope I keep everything up in the air.

I do love the diversity of this job and the many and varied projects I get to tackle.

I started the week choosing a colour scheme for clients who have recently bought a beautiful Federation Home. Each room is painted a different colour and all windows have very fussy curtains. Whilst my clients like the traditional look, they also like the more relaxed feel of neutral walls and more simple window coverings. So after the colour selection I had fun choosing a selection of Sanderson fabrics to show them next week.

I have also been tile shopping looking for a hard wearing, easily maintained, travertine look-alike for an entry and hall. This particular home has a Tuscan influence and the clients here love colour. We are considering a metallic paint for the walls of the dining room and black and sage green upholstery on the chairs. It will be very dramatic.

Then I had a step back in time to a lovely home in an amazing location but very 80′s. Did you read Millie’s post a while back on the 80′s? Boy that brought back memories. This house has some of those features and the clients would like to make it a comfortable, family entertainer. First to go is the swags and tails and the busy bathrooms…oh and the massive chandelier at the entry.

And today I’m off to advise a client on a new kitchen. She wants contemporary, handleless white cupboards with Ceasarstone benchtops and a red splashback. Red is a great colour for the kitchen as it increases gastronomic juices. Not so good if you are perpetually on a diet, though!

Throw into this mix a daughter who wants to go to a Halloween Disco tonight as a “Dead Diva” and it’s been one hectic week. My head is spinning so I’m off to have a coffee and get cracking to have all these things sorted before 5pm.

Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Halloween.

Alex Perry & Electrolux at Saturday in Design

DSC00936

Alex Perry, Australian Dress Designer to the stars, was guest speaker at Electrolux during Saturday in Design. What a fabulous bloke. It was just as if he was sitting down having a chat to us all. Alex was espousing the virtues of the Electrolux Drier amongst other things. I was amazed to learn that he had trialed it for a weekend prior to accepting the alignment offer and threw in a $10,000 evening gown. The gown was on display still in one piece and still with feathers and sequins attached!

DSC00934Alex also spoke of the design of the laundry and how it should not look like a utility room. I’d have to agree with him there. We spend thousands and thousands of dollars on our kitchens making them somewhere we like to be yet the laundry is forgotten. We can spend many hours there so why not include a TV to watch while we iron. Alex also spoke of the similarities between fashion designers and interior designers and architects. People often get comfortable in what they know. It is the role of the designer to push them out of their comfort zone, they should take people to another place. Designers tend to know ideas and different ways of thinking to keep new and alive.

Electrolux Shiny black kitchen

Electrolux Shiny black kitchen

The Electrolux showroom was full of wonderful products that make life easier. They have just launched a new black fridge and had it set in an all black kitchen. This is a result of the predominance of black at Maison et Objet earlier this year. My photo of the black kitchen didn’t come out very well as it was looking into the light. Sorry about that!

Electrolux and Jamie Durie Outdoor Kitchen

Electrolux and Jamie Durie Outdoor Kitchen

Whilst we’re on the subject of kitchens, this outdoor kitchen had everything a man (and woman) could want. Burners, barbeque plates, wok space, and even a cooktop at the table. The advertising blurb says it’s not just a piece of furniture or a utilitarian space – it’s a new concept in outdoor living. The little pots at the front could be used for herbs so the man of the house can add a bit of flavour to his piece of meat.

Tetsuya was about to demonstrate the Electroluc Induction Cooktops but our bus arrived and we whisked away to our next stop.

Glamorous Interiors

Dramatic drapery not just for windows

Dramatic drapery not just for windows

We all need a little glamour in our lives from time to time and recently I discovered the new book from Metropolitan Homes – Glamour: Making it Modern. The book states that modern luxury is not about money but about attitude. I would have to agree. These images show very glamorous interiors that just have something that make them say “Wow”. It’s the thinking outside the square and not making everything uniform that creates a truly amazing space.

Beautiful Benchtops

Fun Lovin' Free Spirit Caesarstone

Fun Lovin' Free Spirit Caesarstone

Today I was shown the new Caesarstone  colours. I love this benchtop surface for its durability and look. The new colours include Organic White and Buttermilk which are a textured almost stone-like look, Whisper – a soft grey, Urban and Walnut which are variations of browns and Black Rocks which is an almost black textured look. They have also included Free Spirit which has a multitude of chunks and chips of shells and amethyst. It oozes fun and is aptly named, don’t you think?

Stunning Rose Quartz Concetto

But I fell in love with the Concetto which is their luxury surface. I have never seen images of it beforeand would love to see it in the flesh. It is handmade from individually cut semi-precious stones. Also in a range of colours, it has many applications. Backlit for a splash back or undercounter finish would be absolutely stunning. It comes with a hefty price tag but worth dreaming about.
