Bye Bye Bling
I enjoyed my day at Life In Style Trade show on Friday. I promised to report back on anything interesting that I found.
The one thing that stood out when I looked at the show overall, was the absence of bling. Bling has been around for many years now with metallic paint, metallic tiles and shiny surfaces on lighting and fabrics. I did wonder if the GFC would eradicate bling but until now I hadn’t seen any sign of it disappearing.
Most of the items on display at last week’s trade show were made from natural fibres or reused and repurposed products.
Even the jewellery on display seemed to be more subdued than in previous years. It’s still fun and bright and makes a statement but it’s not shiny or showy.
One of the different items I did find at the show was a new coloured range of lights from Who Did That.
A range of Grandeliers, that are made from sustainably grown timbers in Tasmania, have been sprayed with felt transforming the timber lights to something colourful and quite retro.
What do you think? Do you like this new colourful range?

Life In Style
Today I’m going to one of the three Trade Shows which are on in Sydney this weekend, Life In Style.
It’s a smaller show compared to the other two, but they tout themselves as being more design oriented.
There are three sections to the show – Gifts and Homewares, Children’s items and New Exhibitors for emerging designers and businesses.
I never fail to discover a new supplier or two at this show.
I hope you have a good weekend and I’ll let you know all about the show on Monday.

Interesting Colour Combinations
Sometimes when I’m out and about I notice a colour combination that I don’t usually see.
Last week, walking past my local Party Shop, I couldn’t help snap a photo of their window.
The pink and yellow looked so good together. It was fun yet not too bright. The yellow took the girlishness out of the pink.
I went searching to see if I could find the combination applied to interior decor.
What do you think?
Do you like this combination?

Beaded Chandeliers
I’ve been Ooohing and Aaahing over the basket chandelier for a while now. I’ve only seen images of them in overseas magazines and online.
They certainly make a statement.
So I was delighted to find that one of our suppliers has just started stocking a version here in Australia.

Small Green Beaded Chandelier available at Inside Out Colour and Design $605 plus delivery 23cm diam x 36cm height
They would look great in a bedroom, over a dining table or in an entry. I can’t wait to use one in a project.
What do you think? Do you like this look?

Boy’s Bedroom
I’m always intrigued at the selection of furniture and other interior pieces David Met Nicole have for sale that appear in their newsletter. This week I noticed this fabulous antique chest of drawers and thought how fabulous they would look in a Boy’s Bedroom.
I am currently choosing furniture and fittings for a boy’s bedroom so maybe I was thinking of that when I noticed the chest of drawers. Anyway, I set about finding other furniture items to complete the room and have created a collection on Polyvore.
What do you think? Can you see this chest of drawers in a boy’s bedroom?

Love Rules
With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, it’s time to look at a few items for your Love Shack.
When looking to inject some romance into your interior, go no further than the colour Pink. Red is for passion but pink is for romance. Because of its soft, cosy and romantic nature, pink is perfect for the bedroom. It makes the skin glow and what better place to make use of those flattering reflections?
Putting some romance into your home can also be achieved by pairing things together. In the bathroom, if you have the space, instal twin basins in the vanity. This allows for two people to use the bathroom at the same time and also makes sure your toothpaste doesn’t get mixed up with your partner’s shaving cream!
A double shower is another luxury that can be installed if space permits. This is a great time to use different shower heads in each shower so you have the choice of a rain shower or a standard shower.
You could always add a little two seater sofa into the lounge room. This little piece from Jardan would suit any decor.
Or you could recover an existing chair in heart fabric.
Matching His and Hers sunlounges around the pool or on the patio make a great place to sit and relax and read the Sunday papers.
So once you’ve redecorated to create your cosy little shack, don’t forget to fill the table with candles and flowers and indulge in a romantic dinner for two.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

New fabrics
Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting the Elliott Clarke Showroom in Sydney to view the new fabric ranges from GP & J Baker.
There were two main collections being shown, one from GP & J Baker called Marwood which consisted of period style patterns in contemporary colours and fabrics. They were very elegant but in an unfussy way, perfect for today’s family homes.
The other collection was from Baker Lifestyle and is called Opera Garden Collection. This collection has been inspired by the beautiful gardens of West Green House in the UK which hosts baroque operas and music weekends in summer. The fabrics and wallpapers are exquisite but the range that caught my eye are those inspired by the chickens.
West Green House has a marvellous Chicken Pavilion (it could hardly be called a coup) housing an enchanting collection of rare chickens. The interior of the Pavilion is decorated with the Willow Pattern which is depicted on the Porcelain fabric and wallpaper.
I especially liked this collection because I have a chicken collection. Not real chickens, but ornamental chickens. I think many, many years ago I commented that I “liked” chickens. Over the years, people have given me all sorts of chicken things which adorn my kitchen.
So now I have to decide which fabric to use on the kitchen windows- Bantam Trail, Opera Trellis (which is the chicken wire) or Rare Breeds?
What do you collect? Have you passed the comment that you like something and now have a growing collection?

My take on shopping at Ikea
Last month I visited the brand new Ikea store in Sydney.
I’m not a frequent visitor to Ikea as the stores, which get bigger and bigger every couple of years, are not usually that close to me geographically. But I was keen to visit the new store in Tempe to check out the size of the shop and to see what’s new.
When I lived in Hong Kong, Ikea was a staple destination for setting up house. The store was located in Causeway Bay and as most of the residences in Hong Kong were small, one had to be really clever about storage which is something Ikea do really well. Also, most expats were in Hong Kong for a two or three year initial contract, so Ikea products were selected as they were relatively cheap and it wouldn’t matter if they didn’t last more than five years.
My recent trip to Ikea, confirmed that this is pretty much still the case. They do great looking items at good prices but I find the quality is just not there. If you’re looking for something that will last for many years, like my sofa, then Ikea is not the most ideal retailer for you.
However, I do like the way they set up the rooms so you can see all the components and it’s a great place to visit if you are looking for ideas. It’s also great for kids furniture if you are wanting something to tie you over until they get to the next stage and require (deserve) something a little more sturdy.
And then of course there’s all those decorator pieces at the end of the Ikea stores. Tea Lights, glass vases, photo frames, plates, trays and glassware are all well priced and can add a touch of colour to your home.
Like all furniture, I think it looks best when mixed with items from different places to give a personal look to your interior decor rather than buying everything from the one place.
Enjoy your week.
