Sneak Peak
I thought I’d share a couple of jobs I am currently working on.
The first is to find fabric to recover these chairs.
The clients have ordered a new sofa and two comfortable armchairs in this leather.
So we need to find a fabric that will co-ordinate with the colour of the leather, not look too heavy and give a new lease of life to these chairs.
The other aspect is these chairs may not necessarily reside in the same room for the rest of their life so we need a fabric that will work in the other rooms of the house, like a bedroom, for instance.
By choosing a colour scheme for the whole house allows furniture to move around the house as needed.
Another client I am working with, is gradually putting their stamp on the house they bought a year or so ago. We are now looking at the formal rooms at the front of the Federation Style home.
I am convinced that buying a house is always a compromise and there are many things the new home owner will want to change but equally there are many things that should not be touched as that is why the house was purchased in the first place.
The curtains in this room are way too stuffy for my clients. They are in good condition so with a little tweaking we are retaining them instead of starting over. We’ve chosen a new wall colour and the painters move in next week.
The lounge suite that came from their previous home is in near perfect condition so we are going to leave that and work it in to the scheme.
The dining chairs need recovering so my task has been to source some wallpaper for a feature wall in the dining room as well as fabric to recover the dining chairs.
I’ve come up with a number of colour ways that will all work back to the goldish sofas, the cream silk curtains and the new paint colours.
It’s always interesting to see which scheme appeals to the client. They often ask me what would I choose, and I can’t honestly answer.
I like them all (remember I’ve chosen them) but at the end of the day I go home to my house and my client stays with the new decor, so it has to be their choice. My job is to narrow down the search and make sure everything works together and my clients end up with a comfortable home that oozes their personality and preferences.
Often clients are quick to dismiss the options they DON’T like which makes the decision that much easier. I always say it’s just as important to identify what you don’t like as well as what you do.

Birds of a Feather
As an Interior Decorator, it is our responsibility to keep up to date with the latest trends and products available on the market. One of the ways to keep updated is to visit Trade Fairs from time to time. Last week there were three being held simultaneously in Sydney.
It was an exhausting week visiting each of the gift and homewares fairs and after the visits the brochures and flyers that I’ve collected need to be filed and bookmarked for future reference.
It’s also good to sit back afterwards and think about the shows on a whole and look for trends in decor and homewares.
One of the trends I noticed was the Bird Trend. There seemed to birds everywhere on all sorts of decorator pieces for the home.
Eighteen months ago it was the Bird Cage Trend. So I guess it only follows that now everyone has a cage, they now the birds to go with the cages.
Or is it all the interest in Twitter?

Bye Bye Bling
I enjoyed my day at Life In Style Trade show on Friday. I promised to report back on anything interesting that I found.
The one thing that stood out when I looked at the show overall, was the absence of bling. Bling has been around for many years now with metallic paint, metallic tiles and shiny surfaces on lighting and fabrics. I did wonder if the GFC would eradicate bling but until now I hadn’t seen any sign of it disappearing.
Most of the items on display at last week’s trade show were made from natural fibres or reused and repurposed products.
Even the jewellery on display seemed to be more subdued than in previous years. It’s still fun and bright and makes a statement but it’s not shiny or showy.
One of the different items I did find at the show was a new coloured range of lights from Who Did That.
A range of Grandeliers, that are made from sustainably grown timbers in Tasmania, have been sprayed with felt transforming the timber lights to something colourful and quite retro.
What do you think? Do you like this new colourful range?

Life In Style
Today I’m going to one of the three Trade Shows which are on in Sydney this weekend, Life In Style.
It’s a smaller show compared to the other two, but they tout themselves as being more design oriented.
There are three sections to the show – Gifts and Homewares, Children’s items and New Exhibitors for emerging designers and businesses.
I never fail to discover a new supplier or two at this show.
I hope you have a good weekend and I’ll let you know all about the show on Monday.

Interesting Colour Combinations
Sometimes when I’m out and about I notice a colour combination that I don’t usually see.
Last week, walking past my local Party Shop, I couldn’t help snap a photo of their window.
The pink and yellow looked so good together. It was fun yet not too bright. The yellow took the girlishness out of the pink.
I went searching to see if I could find the combination applied to interior decor.
What do you think?
Do you like this combination?

Beaded Chandeliers
I’ve been Ooohing and Aaahing over the basket chandelier for a while now. I’ve only seen images of them in overseas magazines and online.
They certainly make a statement.
So I was delighted to find that one of our suppliers has just started stocking a version here in Australia.

They would look great in a bedroom, over a dining table or in an entry. I can’t wait to use one in a project.

Boy’s Bedroom
I’m always intrigued at the selection of furniture and other interior pieces David Met Nicole have for sale that appear in their newsletter. This week I noticed this fabulous antique chest of drawers and thought how fabulous they would look in a Boy’s Bedroom.
I am currently choosing furniture and fittings for a boy’s bedroom so maybe I was thinking of that when I noticed the chest of drawers. Anyway, I set about finding other furniture items to complete the room and have created a collection on Polyvore.
What do you think? Can you see this chest of drawers in a boy’s bedroom?

Love Rules
With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, it’s time to look at a few items for your Love Shack.
When looking to inject some romance into your interior, go no further than the colour Pink. Red is for passion but pink is for romance. Because of its soft, cosy and romantic nature, pink is perfect for the bedroom. It makes the skin glow and what better place to make use of those flattering reflections?
Putting some romance into your home can also be achieved by pairing things together. In the bathroom, if you have the space, instal twin basins in the vanity. This allows for two people to use the bathroom at the same time and also makes sure your toothpaste doesn’t get mixed up with your partner’s shaving cream!
A double shower is another luxury that can be installed if space permits. This is a great time to use different shower heads in each shower so you have the choice of a rain shower or a standard shower.
You could always add a little two seater sofa into the lounge room. This little piece from Jardan would suit any decor.
Or you could recover an existing chair in heart fabric.
Matching His and Hers sunlounges around the pool or on the patio make a great place to sit and relax and read the Sunday papers.
So once you’ve redecorated to create your cosy little shack, don’t forget to fill the table with candles and flowers and indulge in a romantic dinner for two.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
